Bible Online King James Version
Sunday, April 11th, 2010Orthodox Christians, why would the Orthodox church use a protestant bible?
I want to convert to Orthodox Christianity and I have been researching which bible to use.
I saw on the Syriac Orthodox Church website a post containing the New King James Version online. It listed all of the books contained in it. I counted 66 books total, which is the protestant bible.
However, the Oriental Orthodox Christians split from the Catholic church at the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD). Protestantism began with Lutherism that came about circa year 1500 AD, and Martin Luther removed some of the books from the Catholic bible.
Why would a church that is said to have remained unchanged in doctrine since 451 AD promote the use of a bible using doctrines originating in the 1500s?

So just to clarify – the King James Version of the New Testament is the same as the Orthodox version, and only the old testaments differ?
The Eastern Orthodox (from whom the Oriental Orthodox also split, since EO an RC were united for about another 6-800 years) retain use of the original books as well (EO have a couple more than RC, and OO another one or two). The “books” — “ta biblia”in Greek — are those collected works considered important by the Church. The list of OT books varies slighly among the ancient churches.
Sometimes it’s a matter of convenience and availability which Bibles are used.
There is a recent Eastern Orthodox translation of the Hebrew scriptures that includes the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical books, along with the New Testament, all used by the church from the beginning. It’s available from Conciliar Press:
